VESTIDO DE SALOMÉ

About the Capoeira Music Vestido de Salomé

by Graduado Topete

This song is about Salvador, Bahia, and a famous capoeirista named Samuel Querido de Deus, who lived in Salvador in the early 20th century, during and even before the time of Mestres Pastinha and Bimba. He was of the most talented and respected capoeiristas of his time, written about in several books by Brazilian author Jorge Amado.

Samuel Querido de Deus was also a skilled saveirista, who made his living piloting a saveiro. Saveiros are an iconic type of boat used in Bahia for trade, bringing products along the rivers and bay to the markets of Salvador. They were also used as ferries, and were the main way to reach the Ilha de Maré, a very famous island in the world of capoeira. Caxias wrote this song to give some setting and meaning to this piece of history.

VESTIDO DE SALOMÉ LYRICS

(coro)

Vou de saveiro

À Ilha de Maré

Saveirista vai me levar

Vou ver Salomé

Samuel Querido-De-Deus

Vai sair para o mar

Lendário capoeira

Melhor saveirista do lugar

(coro)

Duas coisas nesse mundo

Que me dão muita alegria

O amor de Salomé

Jogar capoeira no cais da Bahia

(coro)

Adão cade Salomé

Procurei no mercado

Camafeu me avisou

Que partiu no saveiro sem deixar recado

(coro)

Meu amor é ela

O coração dela é meu

Eu me chamo chita-fina

Daquele vestido seu
