NEGRO FUGIDO

Traz esse negro pra mim o mandingo

Traz esse negro pra cá

Traz esse negro pra mim o mandingo

É ordem dá sinhá

(coro)

Na senzala grande zum zum zum

Casa grande mandou espiar

O negro não está na corrente

O negro não está mais lá

(coro)

O mandingo pegou o patuá

Ajoelhou e fez sua oração

Pediu pra livrar do perigo

E não ser pego na traição.

(coro)

A mãe preta lá na senzala

No canto começou a rezar

Para o negro chegar no quilombo

E do mandingo escapar.

(coro)

Na trilha da mata fechada

De tocaia o mandingo a esperar

Pra pegar o negro fugido

O negro dá sinhá.

(coro)

Chegando perto do quilombo

O mandingo se manifestou ,

Mas astuto era o negro fugido

Que na capoeira o derrotou

MÚSICA: NEGRO FUGIDO

RITMO: BENGUELA

AUTORES: PROF. GORDINHO / GRADUADO GUINDASTE

In this song, Professor Gordinho and Graduado Guindaste tell the story of a slave running away from the plantation to the quilombo (a community of escaped slaves) and later being ambushed by the Mandingo. Fortunately he was trained in capoeira, defeated his opponent, and escaped to freedom!

The Mandingos were one of the many West African tribes who were enslaved and brought to Brazil. Many were highly educated, could read, write, and do mathematics. Because of this they were given more trusted positions in the house, such as "capitão do mato", who had the job of hunting and catching escaped slaves.

Mandingos were known to be both intelligent and dangerous, two important qualities for a capoeirista to possess. For this reason, a mandingueiro is considered someone to be treated with caution and respect.  In Capoeira, mandinga takes the form of deception, cunningness and cleverness.
